A painting by J. Moore of a woman circa 1720. Typical of portraits of its time with its delicate handling and subtle precision, visible most clearly in the face of the sitter. Moore painted during the same period as Thomas Gainsborough and demonstrates a similar style. Although we have little information on the sitter, we can see she is a lady of affluence due to her pale skin. It was commonly understood that if you had pale skin during this period you spent a lot of time indoors and therefore it was safe to assume an aristocratic background. This is essentially a fine example of British portraiture from the late 18th century.
